Helping your parents use their Extras: 5 things you can do

If your parents aren't confident in English or with apps, these five steps make dental, optical and physio visits much easier.

1. Understand their policy

Are your parents on your family policy or their own? Which Extras categories are included, and what are the limits? Go through it together in the insurer's app and save screenshots.

2. Set up the digital member card

Many insurers' apps include a digital member card that works with HICAPS. Install it and log in for your parents, so a forgotten card isn't a problem.

3. Find a practitioner who speaks their language

Being able to describe symptoms in their own language matters. Our map filters providers by language, and each provider page lists the languages its practitioners speak.

4. Ask for a quote first

For bigger items like fillings, crowns or multifocal glasses, ask the provider for a quote with item numbers, then check the rebate with the insurer.

5. Let us handle the booking

Busy at work, and your parents would rather not call in English? Tell us what they need and where they live — our Chinese-speaking team finds the provider, books the time and explains what to expect, for free.

This article is general information, not medical or insurance advice. Your insurer decides what you can claim; follow your practitioner's advice on treatment.
