Chinese-speaking optometrists in Sydney
Optometrists test your vision and eye health, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and refer you to an eye specialist if needed.
What is an optometrist?
An optometrist has completed an optometry degree (usually about five years) and is registered with the Optometry Board of Australia through Ahpra. They are the main primary eye care professionals.
What an optometrist does
- Vision tests and prescriptions for glasses
- Eye health checks for early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts
- Contact lens fitting; some are endorsed to prescribe medicines for eye conditions
How they differ from similar roles
Optical dispensers fit glasses to a prescription but don't examine eyes. An ophthalmologist is a medical specialist who does eye surgery and treats complex eye disease, usually with a referral.
When to see an optometrist
- Blurry vision, or needing new glasses
- Tired or dry eyes from screens
- Regular eye health checks for older parents
How Extras usually pays
Typical price $250–$600; Extras typically pays $150–$300 (per pair of glasses).
(Estimate only — your insurer has the final say)
Glasses and contacts usually have a per-person yearly (or two-yearly) limit — one pair can use it up. The eye test itself is often covered by Medicare.
Prices and rebates for EyesQualifications and registration
Optometrists must be registered with Ahpra (Optometry Board).
