Due for a check-up and clean? How to compare nearby dentists

What a check-up and clean includes, how partner dentists can lower the gap, and how to know your rebate in advance.

Published 2 October 2026 · 4 min read

A check-up and clean is one of the most-used Extras items, and many policies cover one or two a year. Prices and what's included vary between practices, so check these first.

1. Ask what's included

  • An oral examination
  • A scale and polish
  • X-rays (not needed every time)
  • Fluoride

Each item has a number, such as 011 for a comprehensive exam and 114 for a scale and clean. Ask for the item numbers and prices, and you can check each rebate with your insurer in advance.

2. Check for partner dentists

Some insurers pay more at their partner dentists, sometimes with no gap for a check-up and clean. You can find nearby partner dentists in your insurer's app.

3. Hours and language

If you work, look for evening or weekend hours. When taking parents, a dentist who speaks their language makes things much easier.

4. Claim on the spot and pay only the gap

At HICAPS clinics you swipe your card, the rebate comes off straight away and you pay only the gap. A clinic offer and an Extras rebate are separate; confirm each one's conditions.
