When you want to lose weight or manage blood sugar or cholesterol, there are many options: dietitian visits, weight-loss programs, fitness classes. They solve different problems, and Extras treats them differently.
1. Look for an Accredited Practising Dietitian
Dietitians aren't Ahpra-registered; the professional credential is APD from Dietitians Australia. Insurers usually only recognise APDs, and you can look them up on the Dietitians Australia website.
2. Ask what a consultation includes
- Do they review your food diary and routine?
- Do you get a meal plan or practical swaps?
- How often are follow-ups, and how do they check in?
3. Read package terms carefully
Some weight-loss packages bundle meal replacements, supplements or classes. Those usually can't be claimed; only consultations with a recognised dietitian may be. Ask about refunds and cancellation before you sign up.
4. Ask about fees and rebates separately
Ask the first-visit and follow-up prices, then check your policy's dietetics limit and per-visit benefit. A Medicare chronic care plan needs a GP referral, and you can't claim the same visit on Extras as well.
This is general information, not medical or nutrition advice. If you have a chronic condition or take medication, talk to your GP first.
