What is a counsellor?

A counsellor has completed a counselling qualification (from a diploma up to a master's degree) and is registered with a professional body such as ACA or PACFA. They use talking sessions to help with everyday stress and difficulties. The profession isn't registered with Ahpra.

What a counsellor does

  • Listen and help you sort through stress and emotions
  • Couple, family and parenting counselling
  • Support through life changes such as moving, job loss or grief

How they differ from similar roles

Psychologists are Ahpra-registered and can be seen under a Medicare mental health plan. Counsellors are registered with professional bodies, usually can't be claimed on Medicare, and only some insurers cover them.

When to see a counsellor

  • Stress or feeling overwhelmed
  • Difficulties as a couple or with your children
  • Life changes such as moving, a new job or migrating

How Extras usually pays

Typical price $180–$280; Extras typically pays $40–$90 (per 50-minute session).

(Estimate only — your insurer has the final say)

Not every insurer covers counselling. Where it's covered, it may have its own limit or share one with psychology, with part back each session. Counselling usually isn't covered by Medicare.

Qualifications and registration

Counsellors aren't Ahpra-registered. Look for one registered with ACA (Australian Counselling Association) or PACFA — insurers that cover counselling usually require this.

Good to know

  • If you're in danger or thinking of harming yourself, call 000 now, or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
  • To use a Medicare Mental Health Treatment Plan, you'll need to see someone like a psychologist or an AASW-accredited mental health social worker — counsellors usually aren't eligible.
