What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed about three more years of full-time specialist training in orthodontics and holds specialist registration with the Dental Board of Australia through Ahpra. They focus on straightening teeth and correcting the bite.
What an orthodontist does
- Assess tooth alignment, bite and jaw growth with X-rays or scans
- Braces, clear aligners and retainers after treatment
- Early treatment for children, and treatment for adults
How they differ from similar roles
Some general dentists also offer clear aligners or simple orthodontic treatment, but they aren't specialists. Only dentists with specialist registration in orthodontics can call themselves a specialist orthodontist — you can check on the Ahpra website.
When to see an orthodontist
- Crooked, crowded or gapped teeth
- Bite problems such as an overbite or underbite
- Your dentist suggests an orthodontic check for your child
How Extras usually pays
Typical price $220–$320; Extras typically pays $120–$250 (per check-up & clean).
(Estimate only — your insurer has the final say)
Orthodontics usually has its own limit, separate from general dental — often a lifetime limit, often only on mid or top Extras, with a long waiting period (commonly about 12 months). Check your policy.

Good to know
- Before starting, ask for a treatment plan with item numbers and the total fee, then check with your insurer how much it pays and whether it pays in instalments.
- If braces are likely for your child, take out or upgrade Extras early to get through the waiting period.
