What it is

Speech therapists, occupational therapists, child psychologists and orthoptists assess and support children's speech, language, fine motor skills, attention and vision.

Who it's for

Children who are late talkers, hard to understand, struggle to hold a pencil or focus, or whose teacher suggested an assessment.

How often

Usually an assessment first, then regular sessions as the therapist suggests.

How Extras usually covers it

Typical price $150–$220; Extras typically pays $40–$80 (per session).

(Estimate only — your insurer has the final say)

Speech therapy and OT are covered on many mid and top policies; each session gets part back, up to a yearly limit. Your child must be on your family policy.

Good to know

  • Some children may be eligible for Medicare or NDIS support — ask your GP.
  • Bilingual children can be assessed by a Chinese-speaking therapist.

Questions

Do I need a GP referral?
Not for Extras. You'll need one to claim through Medicare.
My child mostly speaks Chinese — will the assessment be fair?
You can choose a Mandarin- or Cantonese-speaking therapist, who will take the bilingual background into account.
