Massage, acupuncture & Chinese medicine

Remedial massage, acupuncture, Chinese medicine

What it is

Remedial massage by a member of a recognised association, for muscle tension and strain; and acupuncture and Chinese medicine by Ahpra-registered practitioners.

Who it's for

People with tight muscles or neck, shoulder and back strain, or who prefer Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

How often

As your practitioner suggests — often every 1–4 weeks.

How Extras usually covers it

Typical price $80–$140; Extras typically pays $20–$50 (per visit).

(Estimate only — your insurer has the final say)

Massage and acupuncture are often under "natural therapies" or their own categories, with a yearly limit, and not on every level of cover. Where covered, each visit gets part back.

Good to know

  • Remedial massage therapists aren't Ahpra-registered; insurers require membership of a recognised association. Relaxation-only massage usually can't be claimed.
  • Chinese medicine practitioners and acupuncturists must be Ahpra-registered for you to claim.
  • Many policies don't cover herbal medicine — check yours.

Questions

Does basic cover include acupuncture?
Many basic policies don't. Search "Acupuncture" or "Natural therapies" in your insurer's app.
How do I know if massage is covered?
It depends on whether the therapist is recognised by your insurer, and whether your policy includes remedial massage.
