What it is
Psychologists and counsellors use talking therapy to help with stress, anxiety, low mood, family relationships and settling into a new country.
Who it's for
Anyone feeling stressed, sleeping badly, low or anxious, or who just wants someone to talk to.
How often
As your practitioner suggests — often every 1–2 weeks.
How Extras usually covers it
Typical price $180–$280; Extras typically pays $40–$90 (per 50-minute session).
(Estimate only — your insurer has the final say)
Psychology is covered on many mid and top policies; each session gets part back. You can't claim the same session from both Medicare and Extras.
Good to know
- If you're in danger or thinking of harming yourself, call 000 now, or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
- Your GP can prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan so Medicare covers part of the cost.
- You can ask for a Mandarin- or Cantonese-speaking practitioner.
Questions
Medicare or Extras — which is better?
With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare usually pays more but has a session cap. After that, you can use Extras.
Is what I say kept private?
Practitioners must keep it confidential. We only book the time — we never ask what you discuss.
