Foot problems

Podiatry, orthotics

What it is

A podiatrist treats foot and heel pain, bunions, ingrown toenails, corns and calluses, diabetic foot care, and can make custom orthotics based on how you walk.

Who it's for

People with sore feet, who tire quickly walking, need diabetic foot care, or older parents who find nail care hard.

How often

As your podiatrist suggests; routine care is often every 1–3 months.

How Extras usually covers it

Typical price $80–$120; Extras typically pays $30–$60 (per follow-up visit).

(Estimate only — your insurer has the final say)

Podiatry is covered on many policies; each visit gets part back. Custom orthotics often have a separate limit.

Good to know

  • With diabetes or another chronic condition, your GP may be able to refer you for Medicare-covered visits.
  • Off-the-shelf insoles usually can't be claimed — they need to be custom-made by a podiatrist.

Questions

Can I claim nail care?
Foot care by a registered podiatrist usually can; a nail salon pedicure can't.
How often should orthotics be replaced?
Usually every 1–3 years, depending on materials and wear. Ask your podiatrist.
