Major dental combined limit

Many insurers put major dental, endodontics (root canals), periodontics (gum care) and oral surgery in one yearly limit, usually on mid- or top-level Extras. Names and what's included differ by insurer, so check your policy.

How to make it go further

These share one yearly limit: a crown this year leaves less for root canals or gum care. For big treatment that can be split, ask your dentist whether it can be spread across two years.

Common questions

How can I make the most of it for big treatment?
First check your waiting period has passed (often about 12 months for major dental). Before treatment, get the item numbers from your dentist and ask your insurer what it will pay. If it can be split, spreading it over two years uses two years' limits.
Do check-ups and fillings come out of this limit?
Usually not. Check-ups, cleans and fillings are usually general dental, with a separate limit. Check your policy.
Can I claim on the spot?
If the provider uses HICAPS, swipe your health fund card and pay only the gap. If not, pay in full and claim from your insurer yourself.
